Last week’s episode of Scandal season 5 slowed things down a bit to say goodbye to Mellie at the White House. Tonight, ABC is promising things will heat up again.

In a preview for tonight’s episode, titled “Dog-Whistle Politics,” Mellie reveals there’s a movement to get Fitz impeached. Meanwhile, Jake appears to be checking in with Rowan, and Olivia continues to struggle with her recent “yes” announcement:

A synopsis for the episode teases all of the plot lines seen in the above trailer: “Eager to get answers, Jake unexpectedly crosses paths with someone he thought he’d never see again. Meanwhile, Huck and Quinn recruit a familiar face to help smooth over the media storm surrounding Olivia, and Fitz quickly finds out the true cost of mercy when he discovers not everyone fully supports his actions.”

We’re still skeptical about Mellie’s future with Fitz. On the one hand, last week’s Scandal spent so much time on the separation of the First Family that it’d be crazy not to keep them separated (at least for a while). On the other hand, this is Scandal. Nothing stays the same for longer than five minutes, and the show thrives on couples breaking up and getting back together again and again.

Here’s a fun thought: What if Fitz manages to get impeached and Mellie actually becomes President within season 5? We know she wants to become the Commander in Chief, so this could be her opportunity to do so (as Cyrus seems to be telling her in the above trailer).

It would require some crazy twists and turns, but we’re sure Scandal could pull it off.

Return to Hypable after the episode airs for our recap of Scandal 5×04! In the mean time, check out our (angry) thoughts on last week’s episode.
