The Legend of Korra cast and creators took to the stage at New York Comic-Con to give the show a final goodbye.

’Korra Alone’

As an unannounced surprise for the audience, the second episode of season 4 was shown during the panel. Here are a few teases for you, without spoiling too much:

– Some hilarious (and touching) letter writing happens.
– Two ATLA favorites make their return in this episode.
– We learn just what led Korra to take to the ring in episode 1.
– The extent of Korra’s PTSD, and the Avatar state is explored.

Update: Watch the episode online!

The lack of Korra in episode 1 is made up for in spades for the second outing of season 4, and was definitely worth the wait.

Celebrating ‘Korra’

The panel as a whole felt very much like a celebration of everything Korra, and was all for the fans. Janet Varney, David Faustino, and P.J. Byrne shared a video that they’d created especially for New York Comic-Con, highlighting their preparation for recording their voice — which was infinitely hilarious. “Bryke be with us” and “Bryke give us strength” will be chanted whenever appropriate.

DiMartino and Konietzko also shared the first audition that the three voice actors ever did together. It was a little nostalgic and emotional to hear the read through of the first scene their respective characters shared back in Book One. We certainly got a bit teary eyed over it.

Main antagonist

Whilst sharing some concept art for Book Four, Kuvira was referred to as the main antagonist of the season. Every inch of her design was purposeful, right from her first appearance, and we learned that she was intentionally drawn with the same height and build as Korra. In one of the initial concepts for Kuvira she had a Katniss-like braid, but this was changed quite early on. Why? “The animators in Korea almost killed me for the tassels that the Earth Queen had,” DiMartino said. “So, the long braid had to go.”

Airbender wingsuits

The new Airbender wingsuits that we saw in the trailer for the final season were designed, in world, by Asami. This won’t be touched upon during the course of the season, but it was confirmed during the panel that they are a Future Industries invention. We were excited to learn about that!

Farewell

As a final parting word, the creators spoke about how it had been 12 years since they’d come up with the Avatar universe together — sharing a little house in Burbank, and a keyboard at their computer, cracking open the entire universe over two weeks. Now, 12 and a half years later, they’ve come to the end of their journey and wanted to thank everyone for taking it with them. And there wasn’t a dry eye left in the house.

The Legend of Korra season 4, episode 2, “Korra Alone,” will be streamed online on Nickelodeon.com October 10.
