I challenge you to not be ruined by this story. Elle and Drix are an incredibly compelling pair who have so much to teach us. Their compassion, honesty, and love radiate off the page with ferocity rarely seen in the real world. From the moment I started Say You’ll Remember Me, I could not stop thinking about this book.
Our heroine, Elle, is unknowingly being suffocated by her overbearing parents. They think they know what’s best for their daughter, and, rather than allowing her to make mistakes and learn for herself, they try to dictate her every move. Watching Elle struggle with respecting and honoring her parents’ wishes while also trying to live her life on her own terms is unbelievably realistic and relatable. No matter how old you are, the struggle between pleasing your parents or staying true to yourself never truly fades.
Drix is the ultimate bad boy with a heart of gold. He’s made his fair share of blunders in his life so far, and when we meet him, he’s ready to start a new chapter. Reading Hendrix’s point of view illustrates just how hard rehabilitation is, even when you aren’t guilty of committing the gravest of sins. He may not have actually made the biggest mistakes that he’s been accused of, but he still has a past that he needs to put behind him.
Elle and Drix are the perfect pair to tell a young adult love story. They both have forces greater than themselves that are trying to box their passions and keep them from living up to their potential. I wish I had read this book as a teenager, because Elle’s confidence in what she wants out of her future is more than admirable. She is a great example of how to stand up for yourself when even your loved ones are trying to change who you are at your core. And while Drix has a less-than-ideal history, his devotion to protecting his family from themselves is admirable and heartwarming.
Katie McGarry writes incredible stories, and Say You’ll Remember Me continues that tradition of excellence. I am so grateful to have discovered her books, and experienced all that her characters have to share. If you haven’t read her previous series, Pushing the Limits and Thunder Road, you should probably add those to your To-Be-Read list. You won’t be disappointed.
