The upcoming Saw reboot — which currently stars and is based on a story by comedian Chris Rock — recently added Samuel L. Jackson to its cast.

In 2004, a horror film with a tiny $1.2 million budget named Saw was released, directed by the then unknown James Wan and written by the equally unknown Leigh Whannell. That grisly, gruesome horror movie went on to gross over $103 worldwide — making it one of the most profitable films of its era — and kicked off what would become a billion dollar horror franchise.

It also jumpstarted the upward trajectory of the careers of James Wan, who would go on to direct Insidious, The Conjuring and Aquaman, and Leigh Whannell, who would go on to write many of the Saw sequels and Insidious films and is slated to direct the upcoming The Invisible Man and Escape from New York films.

There have been eight Saw films, all focusing on a serial killer named John Kramer — better known as Jigsaw — who created increasingly extra scenarios and death games which tested victims’ will to live and personal moral compasses.

This most recent film — recently referred to as both a spin-off and a reboot, so we’ll call it a spin boot — will see Saw II, III, and IV director Darren Lynn Bousman return to helm the camera, with a screenplay written by Jigsaw writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, based on a story created by Chris Rock, himself a huge fan of the franchise.

While we don’t know too many details of the plot yet, we do know that Samuel L. Jackson is slated to play Chris Rock’s father in the film. Chris Rock himself will play a police detective, with Max Minghella, from Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale as Chris Rock’s partner and Marisol Nichols — from Riverdale — as the police captain.

The film has already started production and will be released on Oct. 23, 2020.
