To pay tribute to those tragically killed in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday, Saturday Night Live nicely opened up tonight’s episode with the New York City Children’s Choir.

The group gave a stirring performance of “Silent Night,” the classic holiday hymn heard quite often this time of year.

Twenty-six people, twenty of whom were between the ages of six and seven, were killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut on Friday, December 14. Following the song, the screen briefly faded to black before the kids said the classic introductory line, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” It was a very nice idea by NBC and a fitting way to mark the tragedy.

Watch the performance below. We’ll have more highlights from the show later.

It was announced during tonight’s episode that Jennifer Lawrence will host SNL in January.
