If you’re among the many who have gone through life believing Hello Kitty is a cute fluffy cat, you’re wrong, according to the creators of the character.

Sanrio recently revealed that Hello Kitty is not a cat, but in fact a little girl.

The mind blowing discovery to those of us who were none the wiser, like a few of us here at Hypable, was recently revealed by Christine R. Yano– an anthropologist from the University of Hawaii who is currently curating Hello Kitty artifacts for an upcoming Hello Kitty retrospective at the Japanese American National Museum.

Yano told the LA Times that she was informed of Hello Kitty’s true identity while speaking to executives of Sanrio about the iconic cartoon character.

“I was corrected– very firmly,” Yano told the publication. “That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”

The upcoming exhibit is set to run at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California beginning in October.

Are you as shocked as we are by this Hello Kitty revelation?
