An adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comic appears to be finally moving ahead, with a television series reportedly in the works at Netflix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the news, Netflix is partnering with Warner Bros. Television to adapt the beloved Vertigo series for the small screen. Attempts to adapt Sandman have either fizzled out in the past, or been quashed by Gaiman himself. The most recent attempt — a movie from New Line Cinema — did not come to fruition.

Sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter have said that this project will be the “most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done.” They also allegedly reported that Warner Brothers pitched the series to several outlets, including HBO. Per those same sources, HBO declined to explore the project due to the heft price tag attached.

Gaiman himself is set to executive produce the series, alongside David Goyer. Both Gaiman and Goyer were attached to the New Line Cinema project, so it will remain to be seen whether some of their ideas transfer across to the potential series. Meanwhile, Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman) is on board to both write the series, and also serve as its showrunner.

Neither Netflix nor Warner Brothers provided The Hollywood Reporter with a comment, as a formal deal has not yet been finalized. There has also been no indication of an episode count in any of the rumours. However, with the rich content available in the comics, it should be expected that any adaptation would likely span multiple seasons.
