Ready or not, 20th Century Fox is developing a prequel movie to the classic baseball film, The Sandlot.

It looks like the Hollywood nostalgia train hasn’t stopped yet. 20th Century Fox has just announced that they plan to make a prequel film of the 1993 coming-of-age classic, The Sandlot. The film is currently in the very early stages of development.

As Deadline reports, the director and co-writer of the original film, David Mickey Evans, is slated to write the new script alongside newcomer Austin Reynolds.

Obviously, the film is still in very early stages, so there isn’t a lot of information about the film just yet. However, Deadline reports that the prequel’s plot is rumored to be about the legend and early days of the Beast. For those unfamiliar with the film, the Beast is a big, English mastiff that is infamous in the film for keeping a horde of stray baseballs and being a general source of terror to the neighborhood children.

The Sandlot recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, which gave the film a brief return to theaters and some new merchandising. The modern love for the film might be a bit surprising, as it wasn’t exactly a huge blockbuster back in ’93. However, the movie has gained quite a cult following in the years since its released, and in 2005 and 2007, direct-to-video sequels were made, The Sandlot 2 and The Sandlot: Heading Home.

Because the movie is still in very, very early stages, there’s not a lot of information about the movie in regards to cast or release date. However, it is a good sign that the film has signed on the original director and co-writer to pen this new script. If nothing else, it likely means the film will maintain the spirit of the original Sandlot that we all fell in love with as kids.
