Samantha Bee and TBS should’ve learned from Roseanne Barr that offensive remarks don’t go over well.

Wednesday night’s edition of Samantha Bee’s TBS talk show found the comedian calling Trump a “feckless cunt” for not taking a stand against her father, President Trump’s, immigration policies.

But it was only the following day, once backlash arrived, that Bee and TBS apologized.

“I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night,” Bee said. “It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.”

“Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night,” the network said. “Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”

The scene has been removed from TBS’ YouTube page but lives on elsewhere. Here’s CNN’s segment on it, which starts with the “feckless cunt” video clip (censored):

Unlike Bill Maher’s n-word usage and Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet, Bee’s segment was scripted, recorded, and released with network approval. There were many hurdles for it to cross before it made it to television, and it made it through all of them. Would an apology have been made if there wasn’t a public outcry? It’s hard to buy this regret.
