After enjoying tremendous box office success with Safe House, Ryan Reynolds has entered talks to star in Lionsgate-Summit’s reboot of cult favourite Highlander.

The Green Lantern actor is in “positive” negotiations with the studio, Variety reports. Both sides are said to be interested in working together.

Highlander will be a remake of the 1986 action fantasy of the same name, which went on to spawn five sequels and six seasons of a television series – as well as numerous spin-off cartoons, books, comics and video games. The cult classic tells the story of an age-old battle between immortal warriors, with action taking place in both the Scottish Highlands of 1536 and ’80s New York.

While we have no official confirmation on the movie’s plot, we imagine it to closely resemble that of the source material. Despite his clear interest in the project, Reynolds is hesitant to sign a contract until he has considered other offers. The film will be released on an as-yet-unspecified date in 2014.
