The Netflix adaptation also finds director Joe Mantello reuniting with the all-star broadway cast to bring Mart Crowley’s hit play to life.

Set in 1968 New York City— when being gay was still considered to be best kept behind closed doors— a group of friends gather for a raucous birthday party hosted by Michael (Jim Parsons), a screenwriter who spends and drinks too much, in honor of the sharp-dressed and sharp-tongued Harold (Zachary Quinto).

Other partygoers include Donald (Matt Bomer), Michael’s former flame, now mired in self-analysis; Larry (Andrew Rannells), a randy commercial artist living with Hank (Tuc Watkins), a school teacher who has just left his wife; Bernard (Michael Benjamin Washington), a librarian tiptoeing around fraught codes of friendship alongside Emory (Robin de Jesús), a decorator who never holds back; and a guileless hustler (Charlie Carver), hired to be Harold’s gift for the night.

What begins as an evening of drinks and laughs gets upended when Alan (Brian Hutchison), Michael’s straight-laced college roommate, shows up unexpectedly and each man is challenged to confront long-buried truths that threaten the foundation of the group’s tight bond.

The Boys In the Band is set to premiere via Netflix on September 30, 2020.

Original Story (4/17/19:

Ryan Murphy is officially bringing Broadway’s The Boys in the Band to Netflix.

Murphy, who inked a massive overall deal with Netflix last year, took to Instagram to share the good news with fans of the production far and wide.

In his lengthy post, the producer also made the exciting announcement that actors Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Tuckering Watkins, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Brian Hutchinson, would all be returning to reprise their stage roles.

“The Broadway cast of BOYS was so important to me, and as equally groundbreaking as Mart Crowley’s seminal work. Everyone in the cast was out and proud…and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart’s landmark play,” wrote Murphy.

The upcoming Netflix film will also bring back some key behind the scenes players including director Joe Mantello who staged the Broadway revival of Mart Crowley’s seminal work, which takes place pre-Stonewall and focuses on a group of gay New Yorkers.

In addition, Murphy revealed that he’ll be serving as producer on the film along with David Stone and Ned Martel.

The Boys in the Band is set to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2020.
