It’s that time of the year already! Ryan Murphy has made some very interesting comments about what’s to come for the end of season 4 of Glee as well as some major changes coming to season 5!

THR caught up with Murphy at the Paley Center for Media this week when he was honored with the inaugural PaleyFest Icon award. When asked what his plans were for season 5, Ryan noted that they have just begun talks of season 5 though it has not been officially renewed. When asked if everyone on the show will be heading to New York City, Ryan thankfully replied that it would be unrealistic and that he has some major changes coming for season 5:

“No. I think what we’re going to do, and I have to wait until that moment to announce, but what we’re going to do with the show is very different. Not everybody will go to New York, because I think that’s really unrealistic. I really like this season, and I liked going back and forth, but I would really like at one point for a huge chunk of them to stay in one location, which we’ll probably do next year. We just started to talk about that.”

Ryan noted that season 4 will see a giant cliffhanger that will setup his new vision and major changes that are coming in season 5:

“I loved going back and forth, and I think we’ll always have one foot in both, but I would like a big chunk to follow one particular story that we’re getting ready to launch at the end of this year. It’s going to be a big cliffhanger.”

When THR asked about the obvious upcoming graduation of this year’s seniors (Blaine, Brittany, Tina, Artie) Ryan also dished that things are about to get very interesting on the show – we may not be seeing them graduate after all!

“We’re doing some weird shit on the show, just wait. I don’t want to do what we’ve done every year; I want to do something different.”

Ryan goes on to talk about some of the conflict and drama that will be happening for the characters throughout the season and the rest of the series as well saying that it is his job as a showrunner to make things interesting:

“I like conflict, and I think great romances are about creating obstacles and coming together and conquering those obstacles. My job, much to the outrage of some fan groups, is to build obstacles, and then by the end of the series – whenever that is – hopefully have a tremendous happy ending for everybody. The show is about including everybody.”

Wow! That’s a lot to take in. This is definitely more information about the upcoming season than we got last year at this time when we were being told season 4 would be “revolutionary.”

What could possibly put all of the cast of the show in one prime location? One idea that came to mind is a prequel season. Remember, we haven’t seen any of the cast as freshmen. However, as the cast continues to age (Cory’s like 100 years old you guys!), it seems unlikely that a prequel season going back to freshman year would be a feasible option.

Let us know what your predictions are for season 5 of Glee. Is it possible to reinvent the show at this point and still make it interesting and relevant? Glee took a big risk with splitting locations (and tones for that matter) for season 4 with most fans of the show admiring how great this season is thus far. It could be a risky move for the show to go in yet another direction.
