Glee series creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed that season 6 will be the end of the line for the show, and reveals that the finale was originally set to focus on Finn and Rachel.

Murphy revealed the news at an event last night promoting his FX drama American Horror Story: Coven.

“The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story,” he told the media in comments obtained by TV Line. “I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was – he was in it. I knew what the last line was – she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.”

Murphy says that despite this major change because of Monteith’s passing, he’s now worked out a new Glee ending. “I have a good idea,” he said. “I’m going to tell the studio and the network [in a week] how after Cory’s unfortunate passing we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory. And kind of in his honor, which I love.”

The most recent episode of Glee season 5 was the show’s Cory Monteith/Finn tribute episode, which saw the characters attending a memorial at McKinley organized my Mr. Schuester. Several of the characters performed songs in tribute to Finn, and towards the end Rachel joined them to pay her respects.

Fox had renewed Glee for seasons 5 and 6 this past April, and the unusual two-season renewal was the first sign that an endgame for the show was forming.

Do you think ‘Glee’ ending after season 6 is a good idea?

It’s important to remember that the show is just getting started on season 5, so we won’t see the show reach its end until summer 2015 (assuming season 6 is a 22-episode run).

Glee season 5, episode 4 “A Katy Or a Gaga” airs Thursday, November 7 on Fox. See a preview now, featuring guest star Adam Lambert.

Thanks, TV Line.
