Anthony and Joe Russo will be directing Captain America: Civil War for Marvel, but they’ve just signed a first-look deal with Sony. Does this mean they may include Spider-Man in their next movie?

After it was officially announced that Marvel and Sony would be working together to get Spider-Man back up on the big screen, it was only a matter of time until we found out which directors would get to use the web-slinger in their film first.

With the signing of a first-look deal with Sony, it seems as though the Russo brothers will be the first directors to include Spider-Man in a joint project with Marvel. This could also mean that Sony is looking at using them as directors for future Spider-Man films, despite the report that Drew Goddard will be helming the solo films.

Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad said in a statement, “Joe and Anthony Russo are terrifically exciting filmmakers with a sensibility that matches the tastes of audiences worldwide.” Apparently the Russos’ deal with Sony will begin this April, which seems quick considering they’re already signed on with Marvel to what is probably a massive contract.

They’re also supposed to be directing Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War films, after Joss Whedon decided not to return after he finished filming on Age of Ultron, which hits theaters May 1.

The directing duo said, “We’re thrilled to make a home at Sony Pictures, and to be partnering with the entire team. The studio has created an environment that is not only collaborative, but truly filmmaker-friendly and we’re excited to begin developing both new and ambitious material with them.”

New reports suggest that “Drew [Goddard] has not yet met with Marvel but will soon; along with several others,” so we should be cautious about the report released Monday. We look forward to seeing what Joe and Anthony Russo come up with now that they have a contract with Sony, and we’re curious if this will affect their future deals with Marvel.
