Russell T. Davies is best known as the man who resurrected Doctor Who, and built the franchise up over four seasons before turning the show over to Steven Moffat. Davies is now returning to the BBC for a new venture.

Davies had moved to the USA to pursue ventures such as Torchwood with STARZ and other opportunities roughly two years ago. Back in early December, Davies returned to the UK after it was discovered that his partner had been stricken with brain cancer. At the time, Davies announced that he was taking an understandable hiatus from all work.

According to Variety:

U.K. screen writer Russell T. Davies, who rebooted “Doctor Who,” is returning to tyke TV with a new fantasy skein backed by the BBC and FremantleMedia Enterprises aimed at the international market.

The 26-part “Aliens vs. Wizards” is created by Davies and Phil Ford, whose credits also include “Doctor Who.” It will be produced by BBC Wales in cahoots with FME’s Kids and Family Entertainment division.

FME, which is beefing up its children’s activities, will distribute “Aliens vs. Wizards” in all territories apart from the U.K.

Show depicts the clash between young wizard, Tom Clarke, and aggressive aliens, the Nekross.

The BBC also talked to Davies where he stated that the series would star, “…two 16-year-old boys – a secret wizard and his scientist friend – who challenge the attempts of aliens to destroy the earth.”:

“Writing for children is the biggest challenge of all and I think CBBC stands right at the heart of broadcasting,” said Davies. “The show’s a wild, funny, thrilling and sometimes scary collision of magic and science fiction”

“So I’m delighted to launch this show, a true nationwide collaboration – a Salford commission from a BBC Wales team.

“We’re joining genres too – the show’s a wild, funny, thrilling and sometimes scary collision of magic and science fiction.”

The series is slated for fall 2012 on CBBC. There is no word yet how it might be broadcast in the US.

What you you think of Davies’ concept? Is it something that the 12 and under crowd would like?
