In a new interview with the Huffington Post, actor Rupert Grint says he thinks Ron and Hermione “probably divorced” after the events of the final Harry Potter book.

Grint was at Universal Orlando’s annual “Celebration of Harry Potter” gathering over the weekend when he said something that many Harry Potter fans would not want to celebrate: That beloved fictional couple Ron and Hermione may be over.

The opinion came out when HuffPo asked Grint and the other Potter alums what they think happened to each of their characters post-Hallows. Take a look at the transcript (and appreciate how superfan Evanna Lynch promptly steps in and rejects Grint’s idea):

Interviewer: If J.K. asked you where you’d like your character to be off to, what would you say? Swing for the fences, or go as crazy as you’d like with what you’d be doing in that universe.

Grint: [laughs] I would expect Ron has probably divorced Hermione already. I don’t think that relationship would have done very well.

Lynch: What?!

Interviewer: Like living in his own, low-rent bachelor pad?

Grint: Yeah. Exactly. He’s living on his own, in a little one-bedroom apartment. He hasn’t got a job.

Lynch: Don’t say divorced. Say they’ve split up. They can reconcile.

Grint: Yeah, they’re briefly separated.

Interviewer: Ron is on Tinder doing horribly…

Grint: Yeah!

Lewis: Living in a one-bedroom studio apartment all alone, doing nothing. He lives in Kings Cross, right in that area.

I’m glad Grint adjusted his answer once Lynch called him out, but it’s still surprising that he would immediately assume that Ron/Hermione broke up. And did you notice the interviewer’s original question? HuffPo asked this in the context of what each actor would ask J.K. Rowling to do with their character!

Maybe Grint’s basing his guess on the February 2014 one-on-one interview between Emma Watson and J.K. Rowling in which the latter reconsidered Ron and Hermione’s relationship. Remember, the author said that “there was too much fundamental incompatibility” between Ron and Hermione, and that in “some ways Hermione and Harry are a better fit.”

Perhaps the upcoming sequel Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — an official stage play following Harry, Ron, and Hermione in their older years — will answer the question once and for all. I gotta admit, I’ll have to walk out of the theater and take a breather if I learn that Ron and Hermione have divorced.

As for the other actors and their best guesses for their characters? Lynch said Luna Lovegood “would have an adventure documentary series,” and Katie Leung said Cho “would probably have become a really successful entrepreneur, and really cold and ruthless.”

Matt Lewis said Neville would’ve taken Ron’s side in the split from Hermione and would help the redhead get a job.
