Marvel’s Runaways took to the Main Stage at New York Comic Con to tease out some details about the upcoming Hulu series.
For those of us that have been anticipating a Runaways adaptation since Marvel let it slip that there was a movie in development, the wait is almost over. They may not be joining their big screen counterparts as originally planned but, so far, Hulu seems to be the right home for this mismatched team of teen superheroes.
The bulk of the Runaways panel was taken up by a surprise screening of the first episode — which went down a treat with the audience, comprised of comic and non-comic fans alike — but we’re going to share as many of the little details as we can, without any major spoilers!
- Brian K. Vaughan is very happy with the adaptation of the original comics. He is serving as an Executive Consultant on the series, and hopes we love the show as much as he does.
- Allegra Acosta’s (Molly Hernandez) favorite thing about working on Runaways is how diverse and female centric it is. We couldn’t agree more.
- There’s more to the Runaways’ relationship: They were much closer friends than in the original, until a specific incident drove them apart. We won’t spoil exactly what — but it’s an interesting deviation from the source that could provide some additional tension between all of the characters.
- The second episode of the series will retell the first… from the perspective of the parents. One of the great things about making the show, according to showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, has been the ability to explore the parents’ storyline more — which wasn’t possible in the comics. As was said best on the panel, “there are no villains in our show.” Expect for things to get… a lot more complicated.
- All the powers and iconic items featured in the Runaways comics will be crossing over to the show. Chase’s Fistigons, Nico’s magic, Karolina’s powers, Molly’s strength, and Gert’s connection to Old Lace (her dinosaur) are all key features of the show.
- As for Alex Wilder? “He thinks, which is something that a lot of these guys don’t [do],” said Rhenzy Feliz of his character, not wanting to be left out of all of the fun.
- A season one preview clip rolled at the end of the panel, showcasing some of the things we should expect coming up. From the kids facing down their parents, to the Staff of One, Old Lace, and all the family drama you can imagine, this show is going to be everything you hoped for, and then some.
