A new rumor suggests that Marvel is in negotiations with Sony to add Spider-Man to their massively popular Avengers franchise.

While it’s been speculated to no end, a new rumor from HitFix suggest that Spider-Man may be making his way back into Marvel’s hands.

Hitfix reports, “While I can’t get the confirmations I need to verify the story, I’m hearing that there are some very cool ‘Spider-Man’ plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the on screen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds.”

This is certainly interesting, but we’ve heard this before and then Sony has shut down rumors that the webslinger could be moving back in Marvel/Disney’s fold.

HitFix continues, “I would love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.”

While we don’t have confirmations from the original source, we do know that Sony is having a lot of trouble figuring out how to use Spider-Man, and even pushed back The Amazing Spider-Man 3‘s release date.

The studio certainly needs to do something with the character, and their second film wasn’t nearly as profitable as they’d hoped. Andrew Garfield even revealed he was unsure of the franchise’s future, but it would be very exciting if Sony would be willing to let Spider-Man join his fellow Avengers.

Right now Marvel is at the top of their game with Guardians of the Galaxy blowing up the box office, but even they are anticipating some superhero fatigue over the next few years, so we imagine they’re looking for ways to spruce up their film slate over the next 5-6 years.

We would love to see Spider-Man in an Avengers film, but we know that the legality of this is nearly impossible.

Sony doesn’t want to give up rights to what is potentially a very popular character, but they also have to see that Marvel/Disney have figured out the formula, and they may be able to achieve more by teaming up with them.

We’ll be sure to keep an eye on how Marvel and Sony react to these rumors, and hopefully we’ll be seeing Spider-Man in a future Avengers film.
