Johnny Depp may be joining the Marvel gang, as a new rumor suggests he could be playing Doctor Strange.

While it has been confirmed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige that Doctor Strange will be adapted, any casting news is strictly rumor control.

UPDATE: Variety has confirmed that Depp is in early talks to play Doctor Strange. The main concerns right now are that the actor has a Pirates and Alice in Wonderland sequel to complete, but Variety reports that the studios are willing to adjust accordingly so that Depp can take on the Marvel character.

Hypable’s own Jimmy Bean actually predicted that Depp would be involved with the film back in 2011 when the film was originally green-lit.

Latino Review reports that Marvel has actually met with Johnny Depp concerning the role of Doctor Strange. This feels a bit like the time when it was rumored that Depp was going to play The Joker in The Dark Knight, which would later go to the late, great, Heath Ledger.

While their rumors are often proven false, this is something we could see happening. Johnny Depp seems to be making a bit of a shift in his career and it wouldn’t surprise us to see him in talks with Marvel about playing a unique character like Doctor Strange.

While working with Marvel on Doctor Strange would be another blockbuster-type film, the character is fairly unknown. This would give Depp a chance to shape the character himself.

Johnny Depp can be seen next in Transcendence, where two leading computer scientists work toward their goal of Technological Singularity, as a radical anti-technology organization fights to prevent them from creating a world where computers can transcend the abilities of the human brain.

Transcendence will hit theaters April 18, so we’ll keep an eye on the Marvel rumors as we look forward to Depp’s next film.
