Rotten Tomatoes announced that it will be changing up its website to better reflect audiences response and hopefully deter trolls.

Rotten Tomatoes has become the go-to site for movie reviews. It is a place where you can see the response to a film from both critics and audience members to help you decide if a film is worth seeing on the big screen. When used correctly, it’s a great resource, so to protect itself from trolls and those who try to use the service to perpetuate a personal vendetta against a movie, Rotten Tomatoes has announced a few changes.

The site will be changing how users see the “want to see” statistics, changing it from a percentage to a running tally to avoid confusion with the audience rating of the movie.

But most importantly, fans will no longer be able to add reviews, ratings, and comments for a movie prior to a film’s release. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the changes come after an “uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling, which we believe is a disservice to our general readership.”

Internet trolls attacking a film with poor reviews prior to release has been a real problem for the site, most recently seen in reviews for the upcoming superhero flick, Captain Marvel. Individuals angry about Brie Larson’s outspoken nature towards social justice and her highly publicized request for a more inclusive press tour flocked to the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes page and pummeled it with negative reviews well before the movie’s release.

The ability for users to destroy a movie’s audience score based on personal reasons versus film quality destroyed the entire premise of the website. Fans upset at the trend of trolling a movie’s score because of a personal issue a moviegoer has with a movie’s message or main actor have been calling for Rotten Tomatoes to make changes for some time now. It’s encouraging to see that the site has responded.

Rotten Tomatoes has already rolled out its new fan rating system, which you can check out on the website now. Hopefully, these new changes will keep the site as a useful resource for moviegoers rather than a message board for hate and general trolling.
