The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico is recruiting original Liz, Shiri Appleby, to help bring a big episode to life.

Tonight, The CW debuts its highly anticipated Roswell reboot, Roswell, New Mexico. The characters may be the same, but don’t expect a complete rehash of the original iteration, which ran in the late ’90s and early ’00s.

This time around, Liz, Max, and the rest of the gang are all grown up and leading very different lives.

There’s no word yet on whether or not showrunner Carina Adly MacKenzie will bring back any of the original cast members for a cameo. That being said, there is one actress who’s returning to the world of Roswell to help out behind the camera.

Shiri Appleby, who played Liz in the original adaptation of Melinda Metz’s book series, is actually set to direct an episode during the series’ inaugural season.

Appleby will be spearheading episode 9, but unfortunately the cast is keeping details with regards to what the aforementioned episode will entail close to the chest.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, New Mexico stars Jeanine Mason (Liz) and Nathan Dean Parsons (Max) teased that there’s a good reason why Appleby stepped in to direct this episode in particular.

“It’s a big episode,” said Mason. “There’s a specific reason she’s directing that episode, so it was great. I think fans are going to love it.”

Additionally, Mason added that having Appleby on set was an incredibly special moment.

“It was so special having her there,” continued Mason. “She loves this property so much and that’s what you always want in a director — someone who’s just in love with what we’re doing and is so attentive, and every moment is a possibility.”

Mason’s remarks on Appleby’s upcoming episode have definitely got us wondering if the episode in question will mirror one of the more iconic Roswell episodes of the past. Perhaps it’ll feature flashbacks to Max and Liz’s days in high school?

Guess we’ll have to wait a few weeks before we find out!

Roswell, New Mexico premieres Tuesday, January 15 at 9 p.m. on The CW.
