The Road House remake will star Ronda Rousey in the part made famous by Patrick Swayze in the 1980s original.

MMA fighter and all-round badass Ronda Rousey has landed an exciting new movie role: she’ll take the lead in MGM’s upcoming remake of Road House, inheriting what was originally Patrick Swayze’s role.

Variety first broke the news, which was then confirmed by Rousey on Twitter:

Rousey is evidently taking her responsibility very seriously: according to Variety, she reached out to Swayze’s widow to ask for her blessing.

Considering the general remake fatigue expressed by audiences (who nonetheless continue to fill cinema seats, proving that remakes are, in fact, profitable), the decision to change the lead character to a female should come as a welcome surprise. It may be the same story, but at least it provides a fantastic new action role for a woman.

This is Ronda Rousey’s first major Hollywood gig, although she’s made small appearances in several movies, most recently Furious 7. She’s also set to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in Mile 22, and will play herself in a Paramount biopic.

Last month, she made headlines by announcing that she was interested in playing Captain Marvel, the first Marvel superheroine to get her own movie.

While she certainly has the physique to play a superhero — and a bouncer, in the case of Road House — dissenters have been very loudly wondering whether she’s got the acting chops to match her skills in the fighting ring.

We suppose the fact that she’s landing all of these major Hollywood projects is a pretty good indication that she does, or at least that she’s working to improve her craft!

The original Road House was released in 1989. Patrick Swayze played Dalton, a bouncer who incurs the wrath of the town’s “bad guy” when he’s tasked with clearing out a rowdy bar.

MGM is currently looking for screenwriters, and production on the remake is set to begin in 2016.
