The first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has officially been released, so let’s overanalyze some of the best moments from the exciting Star Wars spinoff.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a massive success for Disney, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is already looking like it’ll be an exciting addition to the Star Wars saga.

The first trailer for the highly-anticipated film landed earlier today, and we’ve dissected the trailer for clues about the story in addition to some of the best moments. For some context, the story reportedly takes place some time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

‘I rebel’

The trailer starts off with a reading of crimes committed by our main character, who is played by Felicity Jones, and we find out that her name is Jyn Erso. There’s rumors that she’s actually Rey’s mom, but the trailer doesn’t help us confirm any of those rumors just yet.

Felicity looks incredible as a rebel, and she seems like a Star Wars version of Katniss, except she’ll be infiltrating the Death Star, which is pretty epic. While the trailer is short on details, her character seems exciting thanks to her I-do-what-I-want nature, so we’re dying to know if she’s Rey’s mother.

Poe’s father?

While Jyn’s rule breaking is read, we get a glimpse of what looks like a Poe Dameron look alike, played by Diego Luna. He’s seen wearing a very similar jacket as well, but that could simply mean he’s a pilot of sorts. Considering Poe’s jacket became such an object of discussion during The Force Awakens, it seems this may be an important part of the film.

Diego Luna looks like he’ll be the male co-lead in the film, and not much else is known about his character yet. He and Felicity look great together as they’re running away from trouble, and it should be exciting to see the two stealing information about the Death Star.

Jyn/Rey and Poe/Unnamed Guy are totally related, if Tumblr has anything to say about it:

John Williams’ music is back

Despite all the new faces, we hear a lot of familiar sounds and music. It’s exciting to hear some of the brilliant John Williams’ score, even if Alexandre Desplat is in charge, and it gives the trailer a more ancient feel than The Force Awakens.

It’ll be interesting to see if we hear more of Darth Vader’s theme at some point in this film as well, since it takes place in a time when Vader was at the height of his power. The music might be one of the best parts of the trailer, and that’s a great sign for the film.

Death Star rebuilt

The Death Star has never looked better than in the Rogue One trailer, as it looks beautiful in the shot seen above. What’s a bit odd is that it’s being rebuilt, it seems, but this could be a bit of time overlap that happens in between this story and the other films we’ve already seen.

We also see loads of Star Destroyers around the Death Star, which just makes it look even bigger than it did originally. It’s exciting to see the planet-killer back on the big screen, and we can’t wait to see the duo help the rebellion bring down the Death Star by stealing the building plans.

Admiral Who?

In pristine white, we see our first look at the film’s main villain, who will be played by Ben Mendelsohn. His name isn’t yet known, but he’s clearly a high-ranking individual by the way he dresses, and Mendelsohn is an amazing actor.

Some people believe he may be portraying Admiral Yularen, but it’s unclear at this time who Mendelsohn will be portraying. He looks powerful enough that he’ll be in charge of what happens to the Death Star, and it’s exciting to see an actor of his caliber in this role.

Will Darth Vader be back?

At the end of the trailer, we start to hear Vader’s theme being played. It trails off as the screen goes black, but this story takes place during a time where Vader would be a very powerful person. The above image is most likely not Vader, but it has to be someone of importance, and it’s interesting they chose not to reveal who it is.

The music heard near the end would seem to indicate that we’ll get a glimpse of the beloved villain, but it’s unclear if Disney wants to include him in this story, because it would most likely take away from the new characters that they’ve created. Either way, adding Vader to this film would guarantee it’s a massive success, not that we think it’ll have a hard time at the box office anyways.

Mon Mothma returns

Remember this face from Return of the Jedi (below, right)? She’s back for Rogue One (center), but this time she’s played by a different actress, Genevieve O’Reilly. Interestingly, Genevieve played a younger version of Mon Mothma in Revenge of the Sith (left), so it’s cool to see her back once again. Amusingly, Mon Mothma is wearing the same clothes in Rogue One that she wore in Jedi.

The Katniss shot

We hate to compare franchises, because obviously Star Wars came first, but Felicity Jones puts on her Katniss look at the end of this trailer, and what’s funnier is she’s portraying an Imperial soldier.

We’ve heard that she and Diego’s character both dress up as Imperial soldiers in their attempt to steal information about the Death Star. She looks incredible, and this could be an interesting sequence on the big screen. Seeing her dressed as a part of the evil empire as she makes her way into the room filled with secret documents will be one of the most exciting moments in the movie.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is about a group of rebels who plan to steal plans for the Death Star. The film will hit theaters on December 16, and stars actress Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, and Jiang Wen.
