Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic Broadway musical, Oklahoma! is heading to the small screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Skydance Television is officially in the process of adapting Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! into a television series.

The indie studio is teaming up with the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization to make the forthcoming series.

In a statement confirming the news, Ted Chapin, who serves as chief creative officer at the Organization said: “Oklahoma!’s artistically revolutionary position in American Culture has both kept it at the forefront of theatrical performances and allowed for various new innovations. This first-time ever television series will expand on the life of this remarkably resilient show.”

Based off of Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play Green Frow the Lilacs, the hit musical is set in the farm country just outside the town of Claremore, Indian Territory.

Though the story is set in 1906, fans shouldn’t expect the proposed television adaptation to be a period piece.

Instead, the plan is for the new series to take the story of Oklahoma! and update it for modern times. In addition, the series will feature both new arrangements of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic numbers, along with new original songs.

Behind the scenes, John Lee Hankcock and Bega Brunstetter have already signed on to co-write the series. Their most recent notable credits include The Blind Side and This Is Us, respectively.

Currently, the forthcoming series is without a home network, but sources say Skydance plans to shop the show around to both cable and streaming platforms.
