Summit has selected a director to helm the sequel to Divergent.

Robert Schwentke will direct Insurgent which is slated to hit theaters in March 2015, exactly a year after Divergent opens.

Said Erik Feig, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s president of production, in a statement, “Robert, with whom we have already had a successful relationship, has proven a master storyteller in multiple genres and we can’t wait to see what he brings to Veronica Roth’s next installment of the Divergent series. As well, we are very happy to welcome Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman to the team as executive producers.”

As previously reported, Akiva Goldsman is working on Insurgent’s script which was first penned by Brian Duffield.

Schwentke is best known for directing Red, R.I.P.D., and The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Divergent director Neil Burger was invited to direct Insurgent but decided that the schedules between the two were too close for comfort.

Earlier this month we learned that the sequel will begin filming this May. Shailene Woodley and Theo James will return as stars.

Since we’ve yet to see Divergent, fans may or may not wish Burger returned for the sequel. The good news is that a director change can be a very good thing for a franchise. For example, The Hunger Games director Gary Ross decided not to direct Catching Fire for a reason similar to Burger’s, and Francis Lawrence went on to direct a sequel that was better-received than the original.

What do you think of Robert Schwentke in the ‘Insurgent’ director seat?
