Robert Downey Jr. is already expected to play Gepetto in the live action retelling of Pinocchio, but is it possible he could play the titular character too?

Pinocchio, the Warner Bros. live action retelling of the classic fairy tale, was set to be directed by Tim Burton with Robert Downey Jr. starring as Gepetto. Burton has since dropped out, but Downey is still very passionate about the project.

Not only is Downey expected to play the wood carver Gepetto, but it now appears that he may play the titular Pinocchio too. Currently not much is known, but it looks like Downey will play a Gepetto that is similar to his own age (no age-adding makeup) and either a motion capture or voice over Pinocchio.

Nothing will be set in stone soon, however. After Burton dropped out, Downey suggested that his Tropic Thunder director Ben Stiller direct the film. At the last mention of the project, Stiller was in talks to do so, but that’s as far as it has gotten. If Stiller does make the film, he’ll have to have time in his schedule, and he currently doesn’t.

The original script written by Bryan Fuller was rewritten by Kick-Ass writer Jane Goldman.
