EGOT winner Rita Moreno is officially returning to the world of West Side Story.

According to Deadline, actress Rita Moreno has officially signed on to join the cast of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming adaptation of West Side Story.

Moreno famously won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anita in the 1961 adaptation of the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical, so the fact that she’ll be apart of Spielberg’s remake is definitely cause for excitement.

Shortly after her casting was announced, the actress released a statement expressing her excitement over being asked to star in Spielberg’s take on the iconic musical.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I see myself revisiting this seminal work,” said Moreno. “And to be asked by Steven Spielberg to participate is simply thrilling! Then to work together with the brilliant playwright, Tony Kushner — what a glorious stew! I am tingling!”

This time around, the One Day At A Time star will be playing the role of Valentina. The role is described as being a “reimagined and expanded version of the character Doc — the owner of the corner store that Tony works in.”

In a statement announcing her casting, Spielberg said they’d wanted to get Moreno involved in the project from the beginning, and additionally revealed that they wrote the new role of Valentina specifically for her.

“From our earliest discussions, we wanted to include Rita Moreno in our production. Her Anita is one of the greatest musical performances ever filmed, and a personal favorite of mine,” said Spielberg. “We created an original role for her, and we feel beyond fortunate that Rita will bring her extraordinary gifts as an actress, as well as her deep understanding of West Side Story to this production as an executive producer.”

Moreno will join previously announced cast member Ansel Elgort, who will play the role of Tony in the upcoming production.

Between Moreno and Elgort alone, the cast of West Side Story seems to be shaping up nicely. That being said, there’s still some major roles left uncast — including that of Moreno’s Anita.

We’ll be curious to find out who else gets cast in the upcoming adaptation!
