Ridley Scott (PrometheusBlack Hawk Down, Blade Runner) is set to direct his next film, which he’s been wanting to make for over 25 years!

Scott will direct the film adaptation of The Forever War, which is a 1974 sci-fi novel by Joe Haldeman. Scott has had his eye on directing it for over 25 years! D.W. Harper, who recently penned the Tom Cruise thriller All You Need is Kill is writing The Forever War script. Haldeman also wrote the upcoming film, Hansel And Gretel Witch Hunters.

Deadline provides a synopsis of the plot: “A soldier reluctantly battles an enemy in deep space, and while he spends a short time in battle, the time dilation of space channel causes him to return home to a planet that has aged to the point it is almost unrecognizable to the soldier.”

While the filming rights were originally unavailable for sometime, Raiders of the Lost Arc visual effects director Richard Edlund originally bought the rights to make his directorial debut, but the plan never came into action. Scott and his studio, Fox 2000, then purchased the rights and the adaption took off from there.
