Blade Runner fans were elated when the news broke that not only would the sci-fi classic get a sequel, but Ridley Scott would direct it. Well, we’ve got bad news…

Ridley Scott has done a lot of great things for the sci-fi movie genre. One of them was Blade Runner, the 1982 film starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos and many other great actors.

And interestingly enough, it’s not a remake or a reboot currently in development; it’s an honest-to-god sequel. Understandably, fans appreciate Scott’s decision to stay true to the original, and develop a modern continuation based on the pre-existing world.

Scott has been working on this movie for a long time, developing the script with original co-screenwriter Hampton Fancher.

“We talked at length about what it could be, and came up with a pretty strong three-act storyline,” Scott said in an interview with Variety, “and it all makes sense in terms of how it relates to the first one.”

That’s all fantastic. The downside? Turns out Scott won’t direct the Blade Runner sequel after all. While there is no direct quote from him in the interview, it is stated that he “likely” won’t direct, and that the film will begin production next year, “but with someone else directing.”

Ridley Scott will still serve as producer on Blade Runner 2.

We’re guessing the 76-year-old director simply has too many projects on his plate. Exodus: Gods and Kings was recently released, and his next venture is The Martian, an adaptation of the Andy Weir novel set to star Matt Damon.

We also learn a bit more about Harrison Ford’s involvement: specifically, that while he’ll appear, he won’t play a lead role.

“Harrison is very much part of this one, but really it’s about finding him; he comes in in the third act,” Scott reveals.

If you can type through your tears, tell us who you think should direct Blade Runner 2!
