The title of the sequel to the best-selling YA novel The 5th Wave was announced today by author Rick Yancey.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, author Rick Yancey revealed the title of the sequel to his gripping alien-invasion novel, The 5th Wave.

The second book in the projected young adult trilogy will be titled The Infinite Sea, which Yancey revealed was inspired by a particular line of imagery in the first novel.

“I kept coming back to the imagery [main character] Cassie uses when she’s in the safe room looking for her brother, when the crowd of children makes her think of humanity as ‘an infinite sea of upturned faces,'” Yancey said, hinting that further implications may become clear later. “This image came back for spoilerish reasons,” he admitted, “So I can’t go into all the details.”

Yancey also teased a few details about what readers could expect from The Infinite Sea. The story will pick up only a few days after the conclusion of The 5th Wave, with the surviving characters attempting to continue surviving as winter and the final stages of the alien attack simultaneously take hold.

New characters will also come to the forefront of the novel, Yancey announced. “We get to see this new, Other-created world through the eyes of different characters,” he said, among them the girl named Ringer. “[Her] narrative is the most urgent and haunting of any of the voices I’ve channeled thus far,” Yancey revealed.

And like any story by the grimly comic Yancey, The Infinite Sea “explores the boundaries between hope and despair, damnation and deliverance, and what ultimately makes us us and not them. Oh,” he added, “And expect a huge shocker of an ending!”

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey will be released on May 6, 2014.
