Thank the Maker! Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson will create an all-new Star Wars trilogy!

It looks like the Force still has work for Rian Johnson.

StarWars.com made the groundbreaking announcement today that Johnson will continue on in the galaxy far, far away beyond his work on The Last Jedi. JJ Abrams may be tackling Episode IX — Johnson is getting his own trilogy of films.

Rian Johnson will write and direct at least the first installment in this new Star Wars trilogy, along with his creative partner, producer Ram Bergman.

All we know of the new-new trilogy is a painfully un-elaborated tease from the powers that be at Lucasfilm: The films will “be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga,” and within them, “Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

My circuits are frying, this is so exciting.

Lucasfilm president and producer extraordinaire Kathleen Kennedy says that Rian Johnson’s work on The Last Jedi made the choice an easy one.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” she says. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman say. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on Dec. 15.
