Rhys Ifans, best known to many for his roles in the Harry Potter films and Spider-Man, will be joining the cast of Elementary.

Elementary has already featured characters from the novels such as Moriarity/Irene Adler. It should be no surprise that Ifans will be playing another familiar role, Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s brother.

According to THR, the season opener will take place in London rather than its usual New York City setting. Filming will start in London shortly featuring various iconic locations. Fans will be happy to note that the infamous address of 221B Baker Street will be incorporated as Mycroft’s flat where Watson and Sherlock come to stay.

When asked about Ifan’s casting, executive producer and creator Robert Doherty stated,

I could not be more excited to have Rhys coming aboard. I’ve always been a tremendous fan and feel very honored to have him in the fold. Equally excited are Jonny and Lucy, both of whom have worked with Rhys in feature films. I think this is going to be a lot of fun for all of us.

There is no word yet if the Elementary version of Mycroft will parallel the Arthur Conan Doyle stories. Elementary is known for putting different spins on the characters such as a female Watson and Moriarty/Irene Adler being the same person. It will also be interesting to see if Ifans uses his native, Welsh accent, or if he will change dialect to match that of his co-star Jonny Lee Miller.

How do you think Ifans will fit in with the current cast?
