What is the truth?! At a recent Q&A, The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams seemed to shut down the Rey-is-a-Skywalker theory… and later, promptly retracted his comments.

Despite major clues in the narrative — Luke’s lightsaber calling to her, Han Solo looking upon her with recognition — for a second, it seemed like we could officially determine that The Force Awakens character Rey (Daisy Ridley) was not a Skywalker after all.

At a Q&A session at the Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend, J.J. Abrams gave a pretty substantial hint about Rey’s parentage, which seemed to debunk almost all the major theories floating around out there.

“Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII,” Abrams said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. “So I can’t possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too.”

This would seem to unequivocally rule out Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo, who all of course appeared in The Force Awakens.

But Abrams later clarified his comments in an EW interview, saying, “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world.”

This is a relief, of course, as many fans are still hoping that Rey is a Skywalker, in order to add a level of synergy to the three Star Wars sagas. On the other hand, Abrams may very well be trying to cover his tracks here, as Lucasfilm and Disney obviously wouldn’t want these big fan theories shot down.

If Rey’s parents are not Han, Leia or Luke, that would certainly open up for some exciting new possibilities, especially knowing that Rey’s parentage will indeed be brought up again in the Rian Johnson-directed Episode VIII.

She could still be a relative of Obi-Wan Kenobi, as some are hoping. Not only was it Obi-Wan’s voice guiding her through her lightsaber visions, but considering that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) will likely be serving as her Obi-Wan-like mentor in Episode VIII, this would be a pretty neat role reversal.

Another popular theory proposes that Rey is the daughter of Rogue One heroine Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). On top of the fact that the pair look an awfully lot alike, this theory gained even more traction after Daisy Ridley’s elusive non-answer when the question was posed to her at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month.

Or, of course, Rey’s parents could simply be someone we haven’t met yet, or a lesser-known family of Jedi that have been introduced or mentioned in passing. And if Lucasfilm really wants the third trilogy to continue the Skywalker saga, perhaps she could still be Skywalker-adjacent, if she is somehow related to Padmé Amidala, Uncle Owen, or Anakin’s mother.
