Last night’s mid-season 4 finale of Revenge lost one of its veteran characters! Read on to find out why you should have seen their death coming.

Revenge‘s mid-season 4 finale, “Atonement,” wasn’t very action-packed (other than that girl fight between Emily and Kate), but it was a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride. For weeks we’ve been sitting around and staring at promos such as the one below. “Who will be next?” and “No one does death better than Revenge.”

Although, after last week’s episode when we discovered that Margaux was pregnant with Daniel’s child, we had a feeling that one of them would be the character to bite the dust. And, indeed, it was our beloved Daniel Grayson who died in none other than Emily’s arms.

Unless you are completely unfamiliar with how mid-season, season and series finales work, we saw Daniel’s death coming the second the first flashback with him and Conrad hit our screens. There was still a possibility that they could have killed off Margaux since she was bearing his child, but Daniel’s impending doom became much more clear as the episode progressed.

Come on, he was sitting alone on the beach at night reminiscing, of all things! He was pretty much screaming at us that he was going to die.

We’ve seen some terrible losses on Revenge before (i.e. Aiden and Amanda) but Daniel’s last night was a bit tough. His relationship with Emily was getting to a comfortable place. They were almost able to be real with each other, which obviously couldn’t happen when they were a couple.

We’re glad there was some slight closure between Emily and Daniel in those last moments. She told him their relationship wasn’t ALL a lie and he simply replied, “I know.” But we were a bit surprised he didn’t try to mention anything about Margaux or his unborn child in those last breaths.

From what we could take of those flashbacks with his father, he was eager to teach his unborn child the road to becoming a hero instead of a villain. His last voice over words stuck with us most:

“There is no such thing as destiny. Legacies must be earned by the choices we make. I now know that we write our own endings and we can either choose to hide as villains or live as heroes.”

In the promo for episode 11, on January 4, we see that Victoria is obviously going to have a hard time with Daniel’s death.

Also, is David still planning on killing Victoria? What brought on that train of thought in the first place? Did he discover that she sent Malcolm’s people the picture of Emily?

We kept getting told that the father-daughter duo would be working together and that didn’t really happen in “Atonement.” Maybe they’ll now join forces to rid their lives of Victoria, finally. Then the Grayson’s will be a thing of the past and Charlotte can return from rehab and mourn her brother and mother with her father and sister!

Revenge certainly is one hell of a soap opera!

We will finally get to meet Mr. Malcolm Black himself in the mid-season premiere on January 4. TV Line reports that Malcolm Black will be played by Son’s of Anarchy alum Tommy Flanagan. He is sure to arrive in the Hamptons with guns blazing as he finds out his daughter has been killed.

Since Jack killed Kate, will he be first on Malcolm’s hit list? Will that mean another of Emily’s suitors will be next?

For now we still have a few weeks to mourn Daniel ourselves — but we wish the best for Joshua Bowman and Emily VanCamp as a couple!

Revenge returns on January 4 with the mid-season premiere at 10 p.m. on ABC.
