Dreamless by Josphine Angelini is an action-packed sequel with an intense plot and strong characters. As a second book in the series, it surpassed all of my expectations. This is a must-read series.

Dreamless picks up only days after Starcrossed ends. The town is still recovering from the “freak” storm that left it semi-destroyed, while Helen and the Deloses family are trying to recover from their losses and the newfound information that separates Helen and Lucas.

There are so many strong parts to this story, but I have to say I am a sucker for well-drawn characters. Helen is so complete as a character, you really feel her emotions as you read the story. Helen is facing many different challenges as the story progresses, and one major factor is loneliness. Angelini creates moments for Helen, and in some cases Lucas, that are very real and in some cases painful. The emotion shines through the scene and grabs at your heart allowing you to relate to the character. Helen is strong but not without flaws making her relatable, and as she struggles with doing what she must, as a reader, you want to help her be successful, you may even yell at the book from time to time.

It should be noted that there are a few new characters introduced, such as Orion, but they only add layers to the story. In some cases, familiar characters get new roles that serve to further the plot in an intriguing way. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but a fair warning, you may find yourself frustrated by some of the characters, as the choices they make are not always the choices you want them to make. Please refer to the yelling at the book from time to time.

The plot is action-packed, making it a fast-paced read. There were very few quiet moments in the book, meaning that even if Helen was alone things were constantly moving around her. The storyline is incredibly unique and can be taken in so many different directions that you are never quite sure what will happen next. The element of surprise and constant action will keep you flipping pages late into the night.

This series is a must-read. The storytelling is impeccable and unique. Angelini has established a world that is unlike any other, and Dreamless is a brilliant second book in the series.
