Resurrection, ABC’s new drama, aired tonight and the pilot has us asking so many questions! If you’re interested in watching check out our spoiler free review so you can decide whether it’s worth your time.

Resurrection aired tonight and it was definitely one of the more interesting pilots that we’ve seen. We have a feeling that this is one show that you won’t be able to miss an episode of because if you do you’ll probably have missed someone else who’s been brought back from the dead!

The show’s pilot revolves around 8-year-old Jacob, who wakes up in the middle of a field in China, 32 years after he supposedly died, in the first two minutes of the show – talk about a confusing introduction! Turns out Jacob is from a town called Arcadia in Missouri, and Immigration agent Marty Bellamy takes him to his home where an understandably shocked set of parents welcome him with semi-open arms, confused and hesitant. The episode explores his reintroduction to his home town and the kids he grew up with, now adults, trying to figure out what’s going on.

Resurrection brings us some powerful themes about grief and faith, while at the same time not shoving those themes in your face. Our heartstrings were pulled quite a few times when characters would remember their loved ones, many of whom died several years ago, and see them deal with their grief. One of those characters is a priest at the local church who struggles with the concept of his best friend coming back from the dead 32 years later, which affects his ability to do his sermon. We’re curious how deep into the idea of faith and religion Resurrection will dive into, and are excited to see where it leads.

There are several families and characters who have lost a loved one in the show, and we’re introduced to a lot of them in this first hour, but it’s not overly confusing to remember who’s who. Familiar faces help us keep track of what’s going on – Kurtwood Smith, who plays Jacob’s father, brings us fond memories of That ’70s Show while Frances Fisher, who plays Jacob’s mother, reminds us of the motherly role she played in Titanic, although her character in Resurrection is far more kind.

We’re unsure how many characters they plan on bringing back, but by the end of the pilot episode the count is up to two, and by the second we know there’ll be three, at least. While the pilot focused on Jacob and his parents’ story, we’re sure that the next will further explore other characters that have been resurrected and the confusion by the sudden reappearance of all these dead people.

Rating: 8/10

We definitely enjoyed the pilot episode of Resurrection, and would recommend the show if you have the time and were looking for a new story to latch yourself on to. If you’re busy and have 35 other shows to watch, like this writer does, it may be something you should put on the back burner.
