Taika Waititi might be crossing the great Marvel/DC divide, as he is reported to be in talks to appear in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad 2.

James Gunn crossed the great chasm between the two comic book superpowers when he was let go from Disney and snatched up by DC to direct Suicide Squad 2. While Gunn has been welcomed back into the Marvel fold, it seems he might be luring another Marvel fave to the DC side–Taika Waititi, specifically.

According to reports, Taika Waititi is in talks to star in Suicide Squad 2. According to Deadline, it’s unclear how big or small Waititi’s role would be.

Regardless of how complicated the role would be, it would be adding one more thing into Waititi’s already pretty packed schedule. His comedy Jojo Rabbit is set to release in theaters on October 18, he’s about to start directorial work on the Fox Searchlight film Next Goal Wins, and then there’s his work writing and directing that one tiny, indie flick Thor: Love and Thunder.

According to Deadline, Suicide Squad 2 (which James Gunn wants to remind you is not the final title of the film) will have its first table read on September 11, and production will officially start on September 23. The movie is on track to open in movie theaters on August 6, 2021.

While, depending on who you ask, the first Suicide Squad was largely a disappointment, things are looking up with James Gunn at the helm of the sequel. Adding Taika Waititi to the film, even if he’s only being brought on for a cameo, will only add to the fun potential in this movie.

Should Waititi officially join the cast, he’ll be joining original Suicide Squad cast members Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, and Joel Kinnaman as well as new cast members Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion, Flula Borg, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, and Steve Agee.

We’re excited to see more from Suicide Squad 2 and to learn more about Taika Waititi’s potential role. With production about to kick off, we can’t wait to see what news comes from the set.
