According to sources, Deadline reports that Jim Carrey will be taking on a villainous role in Paramount’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

The movie, which will be part live action, part CGI, is an adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name. Sonic the Hedgehog has spanned several different games across consoles since the early ’90s, and largely follows the titular adventures Sonic, a blue hedgehog with super-speed.

Over the course of Sonic’s lifetime, the series has sold over 80 million physical copies of its games and over 350 million units across packaged software and mobile downloads. There have also been five television series following Sonic, all with varying success.

Jim Carrey, who last starred in Dark Crimes, is in talks to play Dr. Eggman, Sonic’s iconic adversary. No deal has been finalized or made official as of yet, but Carrey would join James Marsden (Westworld, X-Men) and Tika Sumpter (Gossip Girl) on the project.

Jeff Fowler is set to direct the movie, with Neal Moritz, Mie Onishi and Tim Miller producing. The script was written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. There is no projected release date at this time, but the plot should be expected to follow the general video game outline: Sonic must thwart Dr. Eggman’s plans for world domination.

The synopsis from Sony, when they still held the rights, said the film “will look to capture Sonic’’s irreverent tone and spirit, reuniting him with some of the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise, including the evil Dr. Eggman. Playful, mischievous, and quick on his feet in more ways than one, the world’’s fastest hedgehog is known for his ability to move at supersonic speed to protect his friends from their enemies.”
