The LA Times is reporting that Lionsgate is eyeing either Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men), David Cronenberg (Eastern Promises), and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel) to replace Gary Ross as the Catching Fire director.

As The LA Times reports, Lionsgate is looking for a big name director to appease Suzanne Collins, as well as someone who can get production started on track this August.

The master list is seven or eight names long, all men, and all have some significant credits to their name.

Of that master list, those named include Alfonso Cuaron, David Cronenberg, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. Cuaron has a track record of taking over franchises, with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to his credit, as well as the major critical successes Y Tu Mamá También and Children of Men. Cuaron next has the sci-fi blockbuster Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, which is scheduled to release later in the year.

David Cronenberg, director of such films as The Fly, Eastern Promises, and A History of Violence, seems unlikely, in that he has a long history of turning down major studio films, including The Return of the Jedi. Cronenberg next has Cosmopolis, starring Robert Pattinson, which is due out this year.

Lastly comes Alejandro González Iñárritu, this critically acclaimed director is known for his Death Trilogy, Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel. Catching Fire would reunite him with Babel producer Jon Klick, so there is a connection already in place there.

If you ask this writer, all three directors have long track records with some truly powerful films to their credits. Cronenberg seems the most unlikely, due to his style and personality, but both Cuaron and Iñárritu have made dark, sophisticated and stylish films over their careers.

Now vote! Out of these three, who would you like to see direct Catching Fire?
