Ren and Stimpy are gearing up to make their grand return to the small screen— but with a bit of a twist!

According to Rolling Stone, Comedy Central has ordered a brand new animated series based on the 90s Nickelodeon cult classic, Ren and Stimpy.

In a statement announcing the big news, ViacomCBS Entertainment and Youth Group president, Chris McCarthy spoke of how excited everyone is to bring the dynamic animated duo back to television screens.

In the statement, McCarthy also teased that the new iteration isn’t necessarily a reboot, but a “reimagining of the original animated series.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio. Ren and Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Bevis and Butt-Head, and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

Comedy Central will be working with fellow Viacom sister network, Nickelodeon, on the reimagined take, albeit with a brand new creative team.

Notably, original series creator John Kricfalusi is not involved with the project; the Ren and Stimpy creator was previously accused of sexual misconduct in 2019.

Furthermore, Variety adds that a Kricfalusi “will have no creative input into and will receive no financial remuneration from the new series.”

The controversial cartoon, which featured themes deemed too adult for children, first burst onto the scene at Nickelodeon in 1991, and ran through 1996.

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect Ren and Stimpy to make their Comedy Central debut.
