Remnants: Season of Wonder by Lisa T. Bergren is a dystopian novel that follows the story of a girl sent on a divine mission to save the world.

Season of Wonder is the first novel in Bergren’s Remnants series, a dystopian trilogy that follows the story of the Remnants, a group of teenagers who have exceptional powers and have been trained since they were children in order to save the world from those that wish to control it.

Andriana is a Remnant with the power of an empath, while Ronan is her Knight, charged to protect her even at the cost of his own life. As they meet up with others of their kind, called Ailith, they must travel great distances to achieve the goals of their Maker. With their religion outlawed across the country and the very name Ailith being a dangerous word to utter, Dri and her friends will not have an easy journey ahead of them.

As the enemies close in, the stakes get higher and the suspense gets harder to endure. Will Dri complete her divine mission, or is she destined to fail, allowing the world to fall into chaos?

‘Remnants: Season of Wonder’ review

Bergren has written a deeply detailed world that is both foreign and familiar. It is as though the world has progressed too far and has reversed, falling into a time more like the Dark Ages than anything else. Motorized vehicles are rare and carrots are something Dri has only read about in a book, and yet vague reference to the culture of the past pop up here and there, making this world recognizable, if not still wholly different.

Dri’s divine mission is always at the forefront of the novel, whether it be her reminding herself the future of humanity is in the balance, or because she has heard her Maker’s voice and must follow the instructions he has laid out for her. Always trusting in the Maker is not easy, but, then again, defending the people of Earth is no small task.

Though romance finds its way onto the pages, it takes a back seat to the main plot of the novel. It provides its own set of conflicts, but knowing that this book is about so much more than forbidden desire makes it all the more worthwhile. If you enjoy dystopian novels with richly built worlds and well-crafted religions, Season of Wonder makes for a fantastic read.
