The studio behind The Hunger Games series is once again reminding us that yes, they are totally going to do a couple more Hunger Games movies.

On Tuesday Lionsgate’s entertainment vice chairman Michael Burns confirmed that The Hunger Games “will live on and on and on” through prequels which are expected to tell the story of previous tournaments.

As readers know, Katniss’ story begins with the 74th Hunger Games competition. In other words, there are 73 more movies for Lionsgate to make. Or 146 movies if each tournament is split into two films.

Strangely, Burns stated today that “kids” — or fans — have “missed” seeing children killing other children in arenas as opposed what happened in the final two Hunger Games movies, Mockingjay, Part 1 and Mockingjay, Part 2:

“The one thing that kids say they missed (from the early Hunger Games films) was there was no arenas,” he said, referring to the final two Mockingjay movies. “If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas.”

Oh, great! Can’t wait to see kids killing kids in arenas again.

Despite my sarcasm, last month Hypable offered Lionsgate five ideas for Hunger Games spinoffs that we would kill to see. Honestly, I’m genuinely interested in the idea of spinoffs so long as they follow the right characters!

It’ll be interesting to see how involved author Suzanne Collins is, considering she hinted last month that she is stepping out of her dystopian world. Perhaps Lionsgate will talk her into doing some consulting?

Burns made his comments at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York. His remarks surely pleased investors.
