Emmy Award-winning director Reed Morano is reportedly in negotiations to direct the Jennifer Lopez drug lord drama, The Godmother.

Jennifer Lopez boarded the film last summer and is set to portray Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, also known as “The Godmother.” The film will follow Jennifer Lopez as Blanco, who outsmarted and outhustled the men around her to rise from an impoverished childhood in Colombia to become one of the world’s biggest drug lords.

Griselda was reportedly was worth more than $2 billion and was a key figurehead in Miami’s Cocaine Cowboy Wars before being murdered in Colombia in 2012.

“I’ve been forever fascinated by the story of Griselda Blanco and jumped at the chance to play her on screen,” Jennifer Lopez said in July.

“She is all things we look for in storytelling and dynamic characters – notorious, ambitious, conniving, chilling. In a genre dominated by legendary kingpins, I’m eager to shine a spotlight on this anti-hero and excited to partner with STX for the third time so we can bring this compelling, complicated story to life.”

According to Deadline, who first reported the news, Jennifer Lopez will likewise produce The Godmother alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina and Julie Yorn. Terence Winter, Alex Pettyfer, Alex Brown and Rick Yorn are executive producers on the project.

The Godmother was set up at STXFilms last July, which is the same studio where Jennifer Lopez made Hustlers, her biggest live-action feature film opening of all time with with $33.1 million at the domestic box office.

Reed Morano is best known for her work directing the first three episodes of Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, which would go on to win the Emmy and Directors Guild awards for drama series direction.

Additionally, William Monahan, the Oscar winning writer of The Departed, is also reportedly in talks to re-write the script, which was previously written by Regina Corrado (Deadwood: The Movie) and Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos).
