Fox’s anticipated fall drama series Red Band Society premieres tonight!

Get ready for the premiere of one of the most talked-about new series on network television. Tonight at 9/8c on Fox, Ocean Park Hospital opens its doors to the pediatric ward, where doctors, nurses and child patients are ready to tell their stories.

In the first episode, a group of teen patients suffering from a variety of illnesses (from cancer to eating disorders) decide to band together, Breakfast Club style. But although the subject matter is obviously very serious, there is a fair bit of (sometimes dark) humour thrown in there as well.

From the look of the pilot, we’re getting a Glee meets Grey’s Anatomy feel, with The Fault in Our Stars thrown in for flavour – and how could that fail?

Red Band Society is a remake of the Spanish (Catalan) series Polseres Vermelles. Taking the original premise, Red Band Society has changed up some of the characters and storylines to give the show a fresh feel.

The main characters include Nurse Jackson (Octavia Spencer), Doctor McAndrew (Dave Annable), and patients Jordi (Nolan Sotillo), Leo (Charlie Rowe) and Emma (Ciara Bravo). We can expect to get to know these people really well, as the series plans to focus more on the characters’ relationships than on the gritty details of their illnesses.

The series is narrated by Charlie (Griffin Gluck), a little boy in a coma – conveniently omnipotent, and charmingly able to introduce every situation from a child’s perspective.

We are expecting great things from this show. This is more than just a teen dramedy about the ups and downs of growing up, as there is a real, constant thread that they won’t. There’ll be humour and introspectiveness, as the characters come to grips both with their personal identities and their mortalities, and hopefully learn how to live.

After all, as actor Wilson Cruz (Nurse Gomez-Rejon) has stated, “It’s not about death or disease… it’s about life.”
