Get ready to meet Emma’s dad on Red Band Society, as John Allen Nelson joins the show as a recurring character.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that John Allen Nelson has been cast as Emma (Ciara Bravo)’s dad on the Fox freshman dramedy Red Band Society.

Nelson has previously worked with series creator Rina Mimoun on Privileged, where he played Arthur Smith.

You might also recognise him from such shows as Baywatch, 24, and most recently the NBC drama Crisis. Personally, we know him best as “Paul the Wine Guy” from the Friends pilot.

Emma’s father has been mentioned in passing, as a supportive figure in her life.

The character is described as, “Compassionate and loving, a reserved man who chooses his words carefully and a hopeless case when it comes to saying no to Emma.”

When he arrives at Ocean Park Hospital, he’ll do his best to be supportive of his daughter. But he finds it hard to understand and talk to her about her disease, and will find himself tip-toeing around the issue.

Red Band Society is currently on hiatus, and will return November 5 with season 1, episode 6 “Ergo Ego.”

It was recently announced that Fox has ordered an additional four scripts for the struggling show’s first season. It’s not a guarantee that the show will be picked up for a full season, or renewed for a second, but it’s a good sign for worried fans.
