This week, Kevin McHale, who plays Artie on Glee, came to mentor the last 4 contenders for “Generosity” week! And this week there was a huge twist! Check out John’s recap of “Generosity” and leave your comments on this week’s episode!

Talk about twists and turns!

For this week’s homework assignment, the remaining 4 contenders had to sing the classic song “Lean On Me” by Bill Withers. Judging them was Glee star Kevin McHale, who plays Artie. Each of them sounded great, but it was Lindsay who stood out for Kevin and won the homework assignment. Not only did Lindsay win a one-on-one mentoring session with Kevin but she also won Brittany’s magic comb!

Linday’s session with Kevin was basically a guitar lessons, which would come in handy for their big group number.

After the homework assignment Kevin told the contenders that their big group number would be “Sing” by My Chemical Romance. This week, instead of just singing in to the camera, the contenders were going to have props: musical instruments. Alex would be playing bass, Samuel keyboard, Damian drums, and Lindsay, who won the feature in the group number for winning the homework assignment, would be playing lead guitar.

When arriving to the set, the contenders were told that they would be performing with very special guests. These guests ended up being young children or as Lindsay mentioned, “miniature versions of ourselves.” These children came from disadvantaged schools via Education Through Music Los Angeles.

The video was really high energy and probably one of the best that the show has produced thus far. However, I couldn’t really figure out how the judges were going to determine the “generosity” of the contenders through performing in the music video. Were they supposed to share their instruments? This part made me really confused.

At the reveal of the bottom 3 the judges had a lot to say to each contender. Robert and Zach told Lindsay that she was concentrating so hard on the guitar that sometimes her lip synch was off and out of tune. Considering the music video isn’t live, why would the intonation of her voice even matter? The judges also told Damian that when he gets really excited he forces a lot of it on to his face which can sometimes be harsh on camera. Samuel’s critique was about his struggle with the harmonies in the recording studio and not really anything was mentioned about the music video. The judges told Alex that he was the only contender who didn’t work out fun little bits with his child partner.

Ian Brennan, co-creator of Glee, was invited to judge, and wanted to see all 4 remaining contenders perform, last chance performances – not just a bottom 3. Robert and Zach will not be judging the remaining contenders so it will all be decided by Ian and Ryan Murphy.

For their last chance performance, Lindsay was given “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked. Alex was given the gospel classic “His Eye Is On the Sparrow,” which ironically was sung as his father’s funeral. Damian was asked to sing “I Gotta Be Me” by Sammy Davis Jr. And Samuel was asked to sing the class “My Funny Valentine” made popular by such legends as Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. Surprisingly, Samuel didn’t know the song at all.

Alex started the last chance performances with a rousing rendition of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.” Ryan Murphy told Ian Brennan that he saw Alx as “the love child of Kurt and Mercedes, like the little brother they take under their wing.” Ryan also told Ian “His voice of all of them is the best.” After the performance Ryan told Alex that he thinks his Dad would be proud of him.

Damian was next. Ryan told Ian Damian is “by far Mr. personality. He’s the one you root for the most.” After his performance Ryan told Damian that “Vocally you have the hardest road of the four.” Ian made a great point about Damian saying, “He would be a good freshman. Brittany would eat him alive. Brittany would never understand [what he was saying due to his accent].”

Lindsay followed after Damian. Ryan told Ian, “I’ve always kind of wanted to cut her but I never did. We need this girl in the group.” After her fantastic performance Ian asks “can you rock out as well?” Overall, I thought Lindsay had the best performance.

Samuel finished off the performances with a somewhat boring “My Funny Valentine.” Ryan tells Samuel, “We have talked for a year now about writing a character as a different Christian guy or girl.” Ryan mentions that Samuel isn’t the underdog, never has been even for a week. Ryan then asks Samuel when the last time he cried was, to which he responded:  “Yesterday. Thinking about this.” Ian tells Ryan that he is the most on the fence about Samuel and that the other 3 seem so authentic.

Finally it was time to post the callback sheet. By my calculations it seemed as though they were most dissatisfied with Samuel’s performance but I really couldn’t tell. They could have cut any one of the three and it would have been surprising yet not surprising.

In a shocking twist that nobody saw coming, everyone was called back, and no one was sent home! Talk about “generosity!”

This set up for a pretty exciting finale episode, where all 4 contenders would be competing for the 7-episode arch on Glee. There was no mention as to why all 4 were called back…maybe they couldn’t decide? Maybe they had an eye on all 4 for some reason or another? Either way, it’s Damian, Alex, Lindsay and Samuel in the big season finale of The Glee Project next week. And it looks amazing!
