It’s always a pleasure to get a chance to talk to Rebecca Yarros about all things Renegades, but we couldn’t help but ask about her thoughts on what’s next on her author journey, as well as who she ships on Game of Thrones and Teen Wolf.

You definitely don’t want to miss these answers, as Rebecca leaves us with a lot to be excited about including three upcoming books! Oh, and she makes a Sophie’s Choice decision between Thor:Ragnarok and Justice League.

Our chat with Rebecca Yarros

About the Renegades

First of all, were there any scenes or ideas that you had to cut from The Renegades series for one reason or another that you were sad to see go?

Honestly, there really weren’t. I think everything stayed, or we added scenes to each book. I’m notorious for lengthy books, lol!

Did any of the characters start out dramatically different from how we know them now?

Absolutely! I honestly added the extreme sports angle after we’d signed the contract when I started drafting Wilder. It changed the whole series!

With how well these stories weave together, did you know who Penna was going to end up with from the beginning or did Cruz’ awesomeness come to you while writing Wilder or Nova?

Ha! I do love Cruz! Penna and Cruz were the first couple I had plotted when I pitched the series. The idea came to me because my best friend had done Semester At Sea (Leah is named after her) and I knew that they were the only American ship at the time allowed to dock in Cuba. When diplomatic relations opened up, it changed a bit of the plot, but Cruz had been there since the beginning.

Are there any stunts you wish you had been able to write into the Renegades that just didn’t work out?

I would have loved to write an X Games sequence and really show the competition. But my books are already soooooo long and we didn’t have the room for it.

Would you ever consider writing a novella or something for Nitro, or did you never intend for him to have a stand alone story?
Nick kind of evolved as I wrote Wilder and really came into his own in Nova and Rebel. While I would love to give him his own story, it’s just not in the plans right now.

Do you have any plans to write about the other secondary characters in another way someday (Maybe Zoe or Brooke)?

Zoe would be so fun! But at this time, the last book in the Renegade series will be Rebel.

Any last Renegade thoughts or feelings that you just need to get out?

I loved this series. I loved that it felt like it hadn’t been done before, and enjoyed the risks I was able to take not just with the characters, but the setting. I’m sad to see it go, and will always love this crew, but I’m also excited for what lies ahead!

What’s Next

Thanks to your exciting announcement the other day, we know that your next 2 books are about a soldier and his battle buddy’s sister. Are you excited to fully dive into a military story?

I am! I love military romance. I’m a military wife of almost sixteen years, and since my first series was military as well, it really feels like going home. I’ll actually have a few projects publishing before that one, and I’m super excited!

Are there any other ideas lurking on the horizon that you are excited to write someday soon?
Absolutely! My upcoming work is a passion project of mine that I’ve been waiting more than a year to write. It’s a second chance romance revolving around humanitarian aid work and Doctors Without Borders. I seriously can not wait to get that into the world!

With so many authors pairing up for projects these days, are there any authors you would LOVE to get a chance to write a story with?

Gena Showalter is pretty much my idol, so I’m always going to say her. Seriously. I have some serious fangirl moments there!

Just for fun

What is your most recent five-star read?

OOOOH. The Hate U Give. Hands down. It should be required reading in every high school classroom, and I actually gave it to my 14 year-old son to read last week.

Are there any subgenres you haven’t written in yet that you’d love to someday? (i.e. historical, suspense, paranormal)

Paranormal. Every day, all day. My first book was actually an urban fantasy (it lives in my desk drawer, lol), and it’s always been my dream to return to it.

We know you are a big TV fan, so we have to ask about your favorite ships, SO:

OOOOH, I feel like rubbing my hands together to prepare for these, lol!

Who do you most want to see get together on Game of Thrones?

Brienne and Jaime. Yeah, I love Tormund, too, and wouldn’t argue with some ginger babies, but I just really love the dynamic between Brienne and Jamie!

Who do you think will end up on the Iron throne?

I hope Jon Snow does…that being said, I’m not sure we ever get what we want when it comes to Game of Thrones, so I think Tyrion would be fun, too.

Only five episodes of Teen Wolf left, so who are you most excited to see end up together?

OMG. Stydia. All the way Stydia. After all, it’s in Stiles’ five year plan, and Lydia loves him, so let’s just have that wedding NOW.

Is there an actor/character you’d like to see return that hasn’t been announced yet?

I would love to see Isaac Lahey return. It would definitely feel like everything came full circle, though I don’t think I’ll ever get over Allison dying.

What do you suggest for those trying to endure the last month of drought before all our favorite CW TV superheroes return?

Stay strong. Our heroes will return to us! Check out the twitter feeds and Tumblr, too. The fandom is super active on those two platforms and it’s almost as good as tuning in every week! Plus, they have some great analysis and fanfiction recs!

With Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok coming out this November, which are you more excited for and why?

WHY would you make me choose? That’s so cruel? I mean, Thor is my BOY, but I’m honestly really disappointed that Jane won’t be returning. What can I say, when I ship, I ship HARD. So I’ll have to give this one to the Justice League, because Wonder Woman… oh, and Aqua Man. HELLO. Have you SEEN him?
