Rumor has it that Marvel wants Rebecca Ferguson, breakout star of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, to play Captain Marvel.

Heroic Hollywood has received a “hot tip” that Rebecca Ferguson is at the top of Marvel’s wishlist of actresses to play the titular role in Captain Marvel, the MCU’s first female-led superhero movie.

Rebecca Ferguson stole the spotlight in this year’s Mission: Impossible 5, where she played the independent, capable female lead opposite Tom Cruise. Critics and fans alike applauded not only her performance, but the fact that the character was allowed to exist on her own merit, and avoided the tired “love interest” action movie tropes.

While there’s not much to back up this report, Heroic Hollywood notes that Ferguson recently took herself out of the running for Channing Tatum’s Gambit (the role has now been offered to Spectre‘s Lea Seydoux), indicating that perhaps she’s keeping her schedule free for Marvel.

Captain Marvel is the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe centered on a female character. Carol Danvers is a member of the United States Airforce, whose human genes are fused with the genes of a Kree alien, and she gains supernatural powers.

Carol has super strength, she can fly, can absorb and project energy, and sometimes exhibits precognitive abilities. A pretty badass addition to the MCU!

Ferguson joins Katee Sackhoff and Emily Blunt as rumored contenders for the coveted role. Last month, MMA fighter Ronda Rousey made a play for the part, too, announcing on social media that she was up for the job.

Last we heard, Marvel was courting Angeline Jolie to direct Captain Marvel. The movie is scheduled to premiere on November 2, 2018.
