Less than 24 hours after launching his campaign, LeVar Burton has successfully met his $1 million Kickstarter goal to resurrect Reading Rainbow.

The Star Trek alum was brought to tears when his campaign crossed the million-dollar threshold they had set. Watch:

The return of Reading Rainbow comes with an important mission: To be available to everyone in America so we can decrease the number of illiterate children. Burton’s Kickstarter campaign promises that the new Reading Rainbow will be available to “every child, everywhere.”

How will he do it? Burton will put Reading Rainbow on the web so it is available in every home and every classroom. Schools will be able to use the service free of charge in over 1,500 classrooms, Burton says.

Reading Rainbow is currently available as a mobile and tablet app, which was released in 2012, but obviously has a limited audience given the required device.

At the time of this writing, the Kickstarter has raised $1.7 million. Burton promises that stretch goals (a list of other things the Kickstarter will fund) will be announced in the coming days.

You can still donate at this link.

There are a variety of rewards you will receive depending on how much you donate. High rollers have already snapped up the expensive donation levels which offer things like dinner with Burton in Los Angeles.

Most readers will be interested in the lower donation levels which can get you things like a thank you tweet from the official Reading Rainbow Twitter account.

And because now you really want to hear the iconic theme song…
