Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles, has died at the age of 91, his publisher confirmed.

According to a statement from HarperCollins, Bradbury “died peacefully, last night, in Los Angeles, after a lengthy illness.”

Details of his illness were not made available, but the author had been in a wheelchair in recent years after suffering a stroke.

“In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury has inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create,” the statement read. “A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time.”

Bradbury also wrote episodes for The Twilight Zone and adapted the screenplay for 1956’s Moby Dick, among many other works.

He is survived by his four daughters and eight grandchildren. His wife died in 2003.
